Haruka Fujita
Biografia
I was born in Tokyo, Japan. With the theme of light, I explore new perspectives and expressions created by fusing different fields of art and science. I used expressive media such as sculptures, installations, photographs, and videos.
As a child, I would hear interesting stories about stars from my brother who was to become an astronomer. I remember clearly when he told me that “the light of the stars in the night sky is from a very long time ago” and that “the stars in the midday sky are invisible due to the sunlight but they are there.” Hearing these stories, I was struck by the wonder of light, which later became one of the inspirations behind my creative activities and it still continues to be.
I studied at Tokyo Zokei University in Tokyo, Japan and at Accademia di belle arti di Brera in Milan, Italy. During my time in Italy, I was exposed to the splendour art cultivated by the long history of Italy. At the same time, I was able to appreciate the differences between Eastern and Western cultures, philosophy, and ways of thinking. What I realized is that despite these differences, we also share common visual experiences. This is how I have come to choose the theme of light, which is indispensable for us to “see,” and visual perception. I also apply optical theory to my art works.
Focusing on things that exist in everyday life but are invisible, and phenomena that are familiar but overlooked, I am rethinking what the world around us looks like, using unique materials (sewing needles, soap bubbles, mirrors, etc.). In Italy, I participated in the Venice Biennale (Padiglione Italia/Accademia) in 2011, and in 2007, I held a solo exhibition at the Palazzo Crivelli for the fuori salone as part of the Salone del mobile in Milan. In Tokyo, I had created “Rainbow” and “Cosmos” sculptures from the “Polyhedron series” in 2010 as a permanent installation. They can be found in a kindergarten because I wanted children to enjoy the wonders of light. In this series, I apply the theory of optics. Currently, I am mainly engaged in art activities in Japan and Italy.
