Biography

Anna Sargenti’s Biography (Artist’s name of Anna Maria Di Nozzi)

Rome September 20th 1943 – Salerno September 23rd 2021

Anna Sargenti attended the the Academy of Fine Arts and the Free School of Nude in Rome.

In 1980 her first solo exhibition took place at the L’Angolo gallery in Rome.

Later on she moved to Naples where she kept working on her art until meeting important art critics and historians such as :Ricci, Trimarco, Bontempo, Izzo and, especially Filiberto Menna, giving her work the opportunity to compare and enrich itself through critical dialogue.

Her first exhibition in Naples was in 1987 at the Sala Vincenzo Gemito, followed in 1988 by the one at the Galleria Vinciana in Milan.

Starting from a figurative pictorial research with the representation of female bodies through marked lines, Anna Sargent’s work evolved into a lightening of figurative lines until reaching completely abstract forms.

Since the late 1980s, her canvases appear animated by lines and signs that create dynamic forms where, the construction from a black background alternates with other chromatic dominants linked to specific emotional implications using yellow, blue, red to then turn to white.

In this period, the solo exhibition at Studio Trisono in 1992 is particularly significant.
Anna Sargenti draws inspiration from the work of Andrè Breton, presenting works entirely dedicated to the yellow chromatic range.

Painting is the privileged form of language for her work, but it is worth noting a continuous experimentation through the use of different materials like wood, plastic, siporex, plexiglass, and surfaces where we find iron wires, fragments of string, concretions of foam, collages of photographs and poetic texts.

The pictorial intervention therefore transposes also in a three-dimensional way and ends up involving entire environments, such as the spaces of the Trillone Psychiatric Hospital where Sargenti worked between 1994 and 1995.

The artist also combines his pictorial practice with frequent forays into the field of design and the production of objects with the creation of tables, lamps, jewels, fabrics, ceramics that reproduce the lines and signs of the canvases.

In 2000, the Sala Dorica of Palazzo Reale in Naples hosted Sargenti’s personal exhibition “Ri-Tratti”, followed by “Bianco e l’anima” in the prisons of Castel dell’Ovo in 2003, inspired by the work “Il Minotauro” by Durrenmatt and all focused on the colour white.

In 2005 takes place the exhibition “Come il Giorno e la Notte” at the Changing Role More Gallery where she presents work made with different materials whose trait d’union is the figure of Marlon Brando.

Works of Anna Sargenti are permanently installed on the walls of the Quattro Giornate (“Sabe Que La Lucia es Cruel” 2000, transfiguration in collage form of a poem by Santos Discepolo) and Salvator Rosa (“C’est la Crapule” installed in 2001 and previously presented in Beijing in 1995 at the UN conference of women’s rights) underground stations in Naples.

Her career ends, before her death, with the June 2017 personal anthological exhibition “Tu Sei 1975 – 2017”, a showcase of over 40 years of activity that took place at the P.A.N in Naples
